Sorting processes as well as recycling technologies make more and more technical progress. To be able to comply with the recycling rates demanded by the new packaging law, a packaging design for recyclability is however required. The developed and validated assessment method of the Bifa Environmental Institute reveals potentials for improvement for consumer packagings and makes recyclability measurable. Especially stand-up pouches are at a crossroads and require therefore the use of plasma technologies and film substitutions.

This presentation shows the results of a new development of a really sustainable and recyclable concept for stand-up pouches. Furthermore, the possibilities to substitute the existing compound material will be listed. Finally, the guarantee of recyclability as well as the separation of packaging and decoration will be presented.

Sterilizable stand-up pouches are used as packagings for long-lasting food and petfood. Polypropylene film is an important component of sterilizable stand-up pouches. The requirements to polypropylene regarding thermal and mechanical properties as well as regulatory conformity increase more and more.
