MDO stands for stretching plastic films - but also for overcoming previous limits in flexible packaging design. Modern MDO technology opens up new possibilities if you are prepared to question old ways of thinking and dare to take a creative approach.

For the inline quality control of ultra-thin oxide layers on polymer substrates, Fraunhofer IPM has developed a compact infrared inspection system that measures the layer thickness with high accuracy without contact. The sensor is based on reflection in the phononic absorption band and is suitable for industrial applications, such as plastic containers or in roll-to-roll processes.

The packaging industry is increasingly faced with the task of reconciling ecological, economicand technological requirements with each other. This is where we come in with innovative coating and calendering processes that prioritise saving resources as well as efficiency and quality. The Pressurised Gravure System (PGS®) - a next-generation pressure chamber doctor blade system developed jointly with BASF - enables precise adjustment of the coating weight and achieves extremely uniform surfaces with a return quantity close to zero.

Our efficient multi-layer barrier coating systems allow the targeted optimisation of barrier properties - for both paper- and film-based packaging materials. Calender systems also offer considerable advantages in the production and further processing of films and support the fulfilment of increasingly important sustainability indicators. It is clear that sustainable solutions can only be realised in close cooperation within the industry.

What makes packaging sustainable and how can we quantify this? Using a model study, we show how function-driven life cycle assessments with the inclusion of shelf life simulations enable a sustainability assessment with increased significance. The design of the packaging, shelf life, supply chain and consumer behaviour all come together to provide a comprehensive picture.

Packaging serves to protect our food. The EU's "Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation" now stipulates that all plastic packaging must be either reusable or easily recyclable by 2030. For sausage packaging in particular, this means mono-PET or mono-PP as the packaging material. The latter material is not a problem for the shelf life of the sausage; oxygen barriers can be used here, but this does not apply to packaging made of pure PET. As food for thought, we would like to show an alternative way to ensure colour stability and freshness preservation for such products using protective cultures.
